rapidrig.com is finally up. #RRM3 autorigger is almost ready for its full release.
So what's next? Rapid Rig Partners
Up until now, Rapid Rig has been for production-use only. But I would like to finally change that.
I would like partner with talented character artists to provide high quality rigs on rapidrig.com for the animation community in a way that benefits all of us.
If this interests you, check out Rapid Rig Partners in the FAQ to learn more, and let's talk! Do you know someone else who might be interested? Spread the word!
I would also really appreciate the community's input on how to build a healthy ecosystem of great rigs. I am hopeful it will be great!
Background and Tales of Woe
If you have made it this far, and want some more background on how, why and when I got here, read on.
Highend3d takes a 45% cut of every sale. Imagine a $20 rig. If I were to have partnered with artists on this site, and split the profits 50/50 with the artist, it would wind up to a whopping $5.50 per rig. For the amount of effort, it just wasn't worth it.
Sadly, for as long as I have been developing Rapid Rig, there have been individuals who have broken the terms and conditions of Rapid Rig by selling and distributing Rapid Rig autorigs. Not only generated rigs, but the code itself.
These individuals usually take it a step further to strip out the Rapid Rig autorigged identifiers and take full credit for the rig, while at the same time ensuring that Rapid Rig gets no credit.
I have the utmost respect for our industry, and I would never rig then sell someone's model without their written consent. Yet the reverse happens all the time on sites that have created a platform for this like Artstation, Gumroad and Agora. My dealings with Artstation over these matters is enough for a whole other blog post. They took a hard stance on AI, but on blatant theft and plagiarism, well, that is a story for another day.
